Mission Statement

At Freeman, we are committed to the joy of herbs. We aspire to this each day by focusing our efforts on service and quality, and in doing so, our goal is to make a positive impact on the lives of those who share our passion: employees, retail customers, and consumers.

History

On his family farm, Tim Freeman grew four trays of herbs in 1979, and didn’t sell a single one. The following year, he grew three hundred trays and sold them all. This represented a future of not only insightful business acumen, but also of what was to come as the premier herb growing operation in Canada. Tim is now a North American authority on the art of growing herbs, and his voice is sought for seminars and presentations to horticultural groups, commercial growers, garden centers and hobbyists all over the continent.

From a humble beginning, Freeman Herbs now sells over 70,000 trays, or near 2 million plants, of herbs each year to the markets in Ontario, Quebec, and northern USA. The company is now the largest dedicated herb grower in Canada, and in the top 5 in North America. Yet as the company continues to grow, sight is not lost on the main focuses of quality and customer service. If not for the dedicated approach to these elements of the business, Freeman Herbs and all customers would not continue to experience the success or joy of herbs at such a level.

In January 2004, the Freeman family made another important decision to secure its future as the premier herb grower and distributor in the Canadian market. Having known the Hendriks family for 50 years as near neighbours, and further knowing the passion of their customer focused operation in Hendriks Greenhouses, Tim was completely confident in his decision to sell full ownership rights to their operation. Since 1990, many companies had tried to acquire ownership of his successful family business, but until discussions proceeded with the Hendriks family, Tim was not convinced that the same passion and work ethic for quality and service would be a staple of the business. Those priorities have been secured.

Nearing retirement, but not without his life long passion for herbs, Tim continues to work as a hands on grower with the new business. Committed to seeing the company grow and flourish under the same detailed growing and service standards, Tim will be passing his depth of knowledge to the next generation of Freeman Herbs for years to come. To this is added the strengths of Hendriks Greenhouses’ daily operations, which includes sales, marketing and distribution networks.

Freeman Herbs continues to grow, and currently has 250,000 sq ft., over 100 varieties of herbs with a recent introduction to our new veggie line. To view the full range of varieties, please visit the Products section.
